CNC Machinery Solutions Automation, a division of CNC Machinery Solutions, is showcasing advanced, high-performance collaborative robot technology from Doosan Robotics on its stand at Automechanika 2019 (Stand G95).

The cobots being exhibited – M1509 and M0617 – will be performing different pick and place, and assembly operations at the event – the focus being on demonstrating the cobots’ versatility, safety, speed and accuracy.

Doosan Robotics’ collaborative robots have impressive payload and reach radii capabilities. The M1509 has the industry’s largest payload capacity (15kg) and a reach radius of 0.9m. The M0617 has a 6kg payload and the industry’s largest reach radius (1.7m)

The cobots feature six high-torque sensors on their 6-axis articulated arms that detect the slightest impact. In layman’s terms it means that the cobots, when running in collaborative mode, stop immediately before any collisions can occur. This technology makes the cobots inherently safe negating the need for them to be caged in.

In addition to their different payload and reach capacities, the cobots are supplied with a control unit and a lightweight, but robust, teaching pendant with a 10.1” capacitive touch screen.

Cobots in the Automotive Sector

Recent research indicates that the global collaborative market will grow exponentially over the next few years and be worth $4.28 billion by 2023.

A significant proportion of this growth will be fuelled by demand from the automotive sector where cobots will be used, increasingly. for performing assembly operations as well as production line ‘pick and place’, glueing, testing and inspection and machine tending, as well as for packaging and palletising and other routine and mundane tasks.

Says Tony Dale, CNC Machinery Solutions’s Technical Director:

“Cobot technology is developing at a rapid pace.

“Improvements in human:machine interfaces (HMI’s) on the latest cobots make them easier to use and the use of sophisticated sensor technology means that they are inherently safe.

“The high, and fast, return on investment combined with the relatively low cost of cobot technology is helping drive demand.”

As cobots become more technically advanced and, as a consequence become even more versatile and productive, their use will increase.

Concludes Tony Dale:

“The cobots being showcased on our Stand will demonstrate the technologies’ flexibility, ease of use and high productivity potential.

“We look forward to seeing you at the Show.”

CNC Machinery Solutions has reported that its debut at Southern Manufacturing 2019 was extremely positive with visitors impressed by the Doosan 5-axis machine tool and Doosan Robotics’ collaborative robot showcased at the event.

CNC Machinery Solutions, the exclusive distributor of Doosan machine tools in the UK and Ireland, has attended the Southern Manufacturing Show for the first time in the company’s history.

With business over the the three days being described as ‘brisk’, Mills has announced that its attendance at Southern Manufacturing 2019 was successful with a significant number of machine tool and cobot leads and enquiries being generated. These are now being actively followed up by the company.

5-axis machining

CNC Machinery Solutions used the event to showcase its latest high-performance simultaneous 5-axis machining centre to show attendees.

The DVF 5000, first launched by Mills at MACH 2018 has, since then, proved highly-successful amongst aerospace and medical component manufacturers – to name but a few.

The machine delivers high precision, speed, flexibility and process reliability. It is equipped with a 17kW/12,000rpm direct-drive spindle (a 22kW/18,000rpm option is available), a generous-sized servo-driven tool changer (up to 120 tools) and the latest control technology from Fanuc, Heidenhain or Siemens.

Other standard features include linear guides, a sophisticated thermal compensation system that mitigates against the effects of thermal drift and ultra-fast rapid rates (40m/min) on the machines’ X-, Y- and Z-axes.

The machines’ productivity can be further increased via an optional (8-pallet) automatic workpiece changer.

Says Tony Dale, CNC Machinery Solutions’s Technical Director:

“The DVF 5000 is the latest addition to Doosan’s impressive 5-axis machine tool portfolio.

“Precision, speed, process reliability and flexibility accurately sum up the credentials of the new machine and explain why the machine was such a draw onto our stand.”

Collaborative robots

Southern Manufacturing 2019 was also an ideal venue for Mills to showcase a Doosan Robotics’ collaborative robot (cobot) to visitors.

At the end of last year CNC Machinery Solutions signed an agreement with Doosan Robotics, part of the Doosan Group, to supply its range of advanced collaborative robot systems and solutions to UK and Irish manufacturers.

To help drive and manage its collaborative and industrial robot and automation business, Mills has created a new division, called CNC Machinery Solutions Automation.

Says Tony Dale:

“There are four different collaborative robots in the Doosan Robotics’ range and, at Southern Manufacturing 2019, we showcased the M0609 model, which has a 6kg payload capacity and a 0.9metre radius reach, performing different pick and place tasks.

”Doosan Robotics’ cobots are versatile, easy to install and use, incredibly safe and competitively-priced. They are designed to perform a wide range of tasks and operations from CNC machine tool tending through to inspection and testing – and from assembly to packaging and palletising.”

The M0609 is the smallest cobot in the Doosan Robotics’ range.

Models are available with a 15kg payload capacity – others with a 1.7metre radius reach.

All cobots are incredibly safe and feature 6-axis articulated arms with highly-sensitive torque sensors that are able to detect changes in force and/or minimal impact which causes them to stop.

As well as different capacity arms all cobots are supplied with a state-of-the-art controller, a sophisticated Teaching Pendant and a number of options that include a dress pack, a water jacket and a mobile base unit.

Concludes Tony Dale:

“Visitor traffic to the Mills stand was steady over the three days.

“This was the first time we attended Southern Manufacturing Show – it will not be the last.”

CNC Machinery Solutions, the exclusive distributor of Doosan machine tools in the UK and Ireland, has announced that, in addition to exhibiting a new Doosan DVF 5000 simultaneous 5-axis machining centre on its stand (C220) at this year’s Southern Manufacturing Show, the company will also use the event to showcase the latest collaborative robot (Cobot) technology, from Doosan Robotics, to show visitors.

The decision by CNC Machinery Solutions to exhibit a Doosan Robotics’ M1013 cobot at the event follows hard on the heels of a contract signed between both companies which confirmed Mills’ position as an official distributor of Doosan Robotics’ Cobot technologies in the UK and Ireland.

Says Tony Dale, CNC Machinery Solutions’s Technical Director:

“This is a major development for CNC Machinery Solutions – and an exciting one at that.

“The global demand for collaborative robots is rapidly increasing and the market is expected to experience significant growth in the next 5 – 10 years as more and more companies embrace automation and integrate Industry 4.0 technologies across their operations.”

Doosan Robotics, part of the Doosan Group, is ideally placed to take advantage of the increased demand. The company’s production facility in South Korea is geared up to manufacture 7000 robots per annum – and sales growth is expected to grow 20% year-on-year.

Doosan Robotics’ presented its ambitious Cobot Programme to European visitors attending the recent Automatica Trade Show in Munich in June 2018.

The company sees Europe as a major growth market for cobots and is actively developing a European distribution centre and dealer network to achieve its objectives of becoming a market leader in this technology area within the next three years. The decision to appoint CNC Machinery Solutions as the dealer for the UK and Ireland is integral to the company’s plans.

A key application area for cobot use, certainly in the immediate term, is in automating CNC machine tool loading/unloading operations – commonly referred to as ‘machine tending’.

According to Tony Dale, CNC Machinery Solutions’s long-standing relationships with Doosan Machine Tools and the Doosan Group in general, combined with the company’s market-leading position within the UK machine tool sector and its large installed customer base, “contributed to CNC Machinery Solutions being selected as Doosan Robotics’ distributor in the UK and Ireland.”

Doosan Robotics’ Cobot Range

Doosan Robotics’ range is diverse and growing.

At present the range comprises cobots with a load capacity from 6 to 15kg, and a working range from 0.9 to 1.7 meters. Doosan Robotics cobots are simple to install, easy to use and are competitively priced.

Furthermore they are inherently versatile and help manufacturers improve their productivity by performing complex tasks, reliably and cost-efficiently, within both manned and unmanned production environments.

The cobots also have safety and process reliability built into their design and are equipped with sensitive torque motors that respond immediately to the slightest of external forces and provide certified collision protection. These safety features mean that the cobots do not need to be secured behind cages or fences.

Continues Tony Dale:

“Although machine tool tending is a primary application area for cobots – it is by no means the only one.

“To exploit all application opportunities for growth in sectors that include automotive, electronics, materials handling etc., we have created a new division at Mills – CNC Machinery Solutions Automation – to handle, and provide a focus for, our collaborative and industrial robot business operations.”

The Cobot being showcased by CNC Machinery Solutions at the Southern Manufacturing Show in February is the M1013 system.

This system features a 6-axis articulated robot arm with a 10kg payload capacity and 1.3 metre reach radius and a state-of-the-art HMI control with a graphical user interface for fast and intuitive parameterisation of work activities and sequences.

The DVF 5000 is a productivity powerhouse and boasts impressive rapid rates (40m/min) on its X-, Y- and Z-axes that enable manufacturers to get down to business fast.

The machine being exhibited is also equipped with integrated automation provided by a six position auto-pallet work-changer and a generous servo-driven ATC that can hold up to 120 tools with a 1.3 second too-to-tool changeover time.

Accuracy is also a hallmark of the DVF 5000. The machine features linear guides and an integrated thermal compensation system that mitigates against the effects of thermal drift.

The machine featured has a 500mm x 450mm table with a maximum table load of 400kg but can be supplied with a larger table as an option (630mm x 450mm) if required.

Says Tony Dale, CNC Machinery Solutions’s Technical Director:

“The DVF 5000 is the latest addition to Doosan’s impressive 5-axis machine portfolio.

“Precision, speed, process reliability and flexibility accurately sum up the credentials of the new machine and I am confident that the DVF 5000 will soon become a ‘must have’ machine for component manufacturers looking to improve their productivity, performance and profitability.”

CNC Machinery Solutions is attending Seco’s Inspiration through Innovation 2018 which, this year, takes place on the 9th and 10th October at Seco’s Technology Centre facility in Alcester.

Mills is one of over 40 Technical Partners attending the event and is a principal player in one of the innovative and challenging machining demonstrations taking place over the two days.

This demonstration, one of 16 taking place in total, involves a new Doosan NHP 5000 high-performance horizontal machining centre that Mills is bringing to the event.

Explains CNC Machinery Solutions’s Technical Manager, Tony Dale:

“Having talked to Seco about the focus and direction of this year’s event and its emphasis on machining excellence, we decided that Inspiration through Innovation 2018 would be a great venue to demonstrate the power, speed and flexibility of the new NHP 5000 machine.”

The twin-pallet NHP 5000 is a productivity powerhouse of a machine. In addition to its integrated automatic pallet change system, the NHP 5000 is equipped with a powerful built-in spindle and ultra-fast automatic tool changer. The machine also boasts 60m/min rapids and 1G acceleration/deceleration an all axes.

Continues Tony Dale:

“We are working with a number of Technical Partners i.e. CAD/CAM, work-holding, metalworking fluid, cutting tool, metrology suppliers etc., to develop a machining demonstration that will, I’m confident, capture the imagination of visitors and that will highlight specific strengths and the unrivalled productivity potential of the NHP 5000.”

The demonstration focuses on the machining of a steering knuckle – a critical high-precision automotive component that connects the suspension and steering elements of a car – and has involved engineers from Autodesk, Brown & Holmes, Houghton, Renishaw, Seco Tools and CNC Machinery Solutions working collaboratively to design and prove out the demonstration.

Concludes Tony Dale:

“The demonstration is a true collaborative venture involving a number of Technical Partners.”

Over 3000 visitors to its stand at MACH plus hundreds of enquiries and 20 machine tool orders taken at the Show, put Mills streets ahead of the competition.

CNC Machinery Solutions, the exclusive distributor of Doosan machine tools in the UK and Ireland, has announced that its attendance at MACH 2018 was a ‘tremendous success’ and, according to Managing Director, Kevin Gilbert, “was the best MACH Show in the company’s history.”

CNC Machinery Solutions exhibited 16 Doosan machines on its stand at MACH. Many of the machines, including the Doosan DVF 5000 (5-axis machining centre), the Doosan NHP 4000 (horizontal machining centre) and the Doosan V8300M were new models making their UK debuts at the Show.

In addition to new machines the company also showcased a number of its popular, best-selling Lynx and Puma lathes and DNM vertical machining centres at the event.

Mills, as always, invested heavily in its presence at MACH.

As well as having one of the largest stands at MACH, the company showcased its range of machines and services from, what was described as ‘an eye-catching and thought-provoking “themed” stand’ that impressed visitors and customers alike.

Says Tony Dale, CNC Machinery Solutions’s Technical Director:

“We were delighted with visitor and customer reaction to the stand and, despite the new location of the MACH exhibition at the NEC in Halls 18, 19 and 20 etc., our stand drew in the crowds.”

Naturally enough the success of any exhibition, Open House etc., certainly from a return on investment perspective, will be judged against the number of orders, enquiries and leads taken and generated.

At this year’s MACH event, Mills surpassed its own high expectations and welcomed over 3000 visitors onto its stand. The company also reported that hundreds of ‘serious’ enquiries were generated at MACH and that 20 machine tool orders were also taken.

Continues Tony Dale:

“Clearly the 20 machine orders were the ‘icing on the cake’ but, what was also illuminating and impressive, was the diversity, scope and scale of the orders taken.

“We took five orders for Doosan vertical turning lathes including two for our new V8300 machines, and we also secured an order each for a large-capacity Doosan Mynx 9500 vertical machining centre and a VC 3600 (twin-table) vertical machining centre.

“The remaining orders were for Lynx and Puma lathes and DNM machining centres.”

Mills also reported significant interest in its new DVF 5000 and DNM 4000 machines, and that systematic follow-up of enquiries taken during MACH has resulted in more sales being taken.

MACH 2018 also provided the ideal venue for a number of customers to confirm their Doosan machine tool orders. These included:

  • RT Quaife Engineering Ltd who confirmed their order of two new Doosan NHP 6300 horizontal machining centres and a Doosan (30 pallet) LPS (Automated Linear Pallet System). The machines and LPS system will be delivered and installed at RT Quaife’s new manufacturing facility in Gillingham later in the year and will be the first high-productivity LPS system of its kind to be installed by Mills in the UK.
  • Elder Engineering (Herts) Ltd who confirmed their order for a Doosan Puma 2600SY Mk II lathe.
  • Cogsdill-Nuneaton Ltd who confirmed their order for a Doosan DNM 6700 machining centre.
  • Ballpark Engineering who confirmed their order for a Doosan Lynx 2100 lathe.
  • Lenane Precision Ltd who confirmed their order for a Doosan VC630 5-AX (5-axis) machining centre with a Siemens Control.

Concludes Tony Dale:

“MACH 2018 was an exceptional show and the Mills team worked hard to make it a success.

“We are actively involved in following up the hundreds of leads and enquiries taken at the event and, even though we were delighted to take 20 machine tool orders during the five days, are confident that the MACH effect will be the catalyst for many more machine tool orders in the weeks and months to come.”

The CNC Training Academy, the independently operated training division of CNC Machinery Solutions, has announced that its attendance at MACH 2018 was an unrivalled success.

The company has reported that over the five days in excess of 300 serious enquiries were taken by the Academy for its range of CNC Programmer and Operator training courses and its recently-introduced Predator Software machine tool monitoring and shop floor control technologies.

Says CNC Training Academy Manager, Jeff Hart:

“We were busy from day one right through to the last day of the Show.

“Particularly encouraging and worthy of special mention was the positive reaction by visitors to our Predator Software solutions.

“Although we only signed the deal with US-based Predator Software Inc. to become their main UK and Irish distributor in late December last year, we were bowled over by the response from manufacturers attending MACH who wanted to find out more about how Predator solutions could improve their productivity and performance.”

To help convey the unique strengths and sophistication of Predator solutions, CNC Training Academy Manager, Jeff Hart, ably supported by Mr Jim Abbassian (President of Predator Software Inc.) and Mr Brian Ross (Director of Sales at Predator Software Inc.). ran a number of planned and impromptu information and awareness presentations from the CNC Training Academy stand.

In total the CNC Training Academy took over 140 enquiries for Predator solutions during the MACH Show.

In addition to Predator solutions being showcased, the CNC Training Academy also took over 160 enquiries for its CNC Programmer and Operator courses from customers, prospects and individuals looking to upgrade their skills.

Continues Jeff Hart:

“We are recognised as the number one CNC training organisation in the UK, and our comprehensive range of Fanuc, Heidenhain and Siemens Programmer and Operator courses as well as our advanced and specialist CNC Programmer courses make us the natural destination for manufacturing companies and individuals alike.

“Our attendance at MACH 2018, where we exhibited in our own right, helped us raise our profile and provided the ideal platform for visitors to really understand and appreciate what makes the Academy so different from other training providers.”

The CNC Training Academy is actively following up the leads and enquiries taken at MACH and, with demand for its services being so high, will soon be announcing a number of new appointments to its team of trainers.
